GCSE French

In this course, students are prepared for AQA GCSE French (8658). The following units are studied sequentially over Years 10 and 11.

Year 10

Unit Content

Jours ordinaires, jours de fête

Students learn how to understand, express ideas and give information about food and mealtimes, food for special occasions, shopping for clothes, daily life, using formal and informal forms of address, describing family celebrations, and festivals and traditions.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures related to the context of daily life, customs and traditions
  • Understanding modal verbs (pouvoir and devoir), the pronoun ‘en,’ questions in the ‘tu’ and ‘vous’ forms, ‘venir de’ + infinitive, how tenses are combined and how more advanced expressions are used

Key skills developed:

  • How to understand a variety of spoken and written texts within the context described above
  • How to apply vocabulary knowledge and more complex grammatical understanding to translation and writing tasks
  • How to use key structures to describe a photo, engage in a role play and develop conversation skills

Assessment: Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice questions in all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing).

De la ville à la campagne

Students learn how to understand, express ideas and give descriptions about where they live, weather, transport, region, town, village and district, what to see and do, and community projects.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures related to the context of home and region
  • Understanding the pronoun ‘y,’ negatives, questions with ‘quel,’ and the future tense

Key skills developed:

  • How to understand a variety of spoken and written texts within the context described above
  • How to identify when a number of tenses are combined and how to sequence these when producing language
  • How to apply vocabulary knowledge and more complex grammatical understanding to translation and writing tasks
  • How to use key structures and vocabulary learned in order to develop conversation skills

Assessment: Students are assessed formally in Term 3. The assessment ranges across all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), and includes an extended piece of writing and a conversation task. Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice questions involving all four skills.

Le grand large

Students learn how to understand, express ideas and give descriptions about ideal holidays, booking and reviewing hotels, restaurants, travelling, buying souvenirs, and holiday disasters.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures related to the context of holidays
  • Understanding the use of the conditional tense, reflexive verbs in the perfect (past) tense, ‘en’ + present participle, avant de + infinitive (before doing), demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, and the pluperfect tense

Key skills developed:

  • How to understand a variety of spoken and written texts within the context described above
  • How to apply vocabulary knowledge and more complex grammatical understanding to translation and writing tasks
  • How to identify when a number of tenses are combined and how to sequence these when producing language

Year 11

Unit Content

Au collège

 

Students learn how to understand, express ideas and give descriptions about school experiences and timetables. They learn to make cultural comparisons between schooling in the UK and in Francophone countries, including details about school rules, health and wellbeing, and views on smoking, drugs and alcohol.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures related to the context of school, health and well-being
  • Understanding the use of subject pronouns ‘il/elle/ils/elles’ (he/she/they) correctly, impersonal expressions ‘il faut/il est interdit de + infinitive (one must), the imperative (commands) and deepening understanding of tenses within past/present/future timeframes

Key skills developed:

  • How to understand a variety of spoken and written texts within this context
  • How to apply vocabulary knowledge and more complex grammatical understanding to translation and writing tasks
  • How to use key structures and vocab learned in order to develop conversation skills

Assessment: Formal Assessment takes place at the start of Term 6 and includes all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), including an extended piece of writing and a conversation task. Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice questions in all four skills.

Bon travail

Students learn how to understand, express ideas and give descriptions about career choices, plans, hopes and wishes, and applying for jobs. 

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures related to the context of jobs and ambitions
  • Understanding comparatives and superlatives, the subjunctive, direct object pronouns in the perfect tense, and verbs with ‘à’ and ‘de’

Key skills developed:

  • How to understand a variety of spoken and written texts within the context described above
  • How to identify when a number of tenses are combined and how to sequence these when producing language
  • How to apply vocabulary knowledge and more complex grammatical understanding to translation and writing tasks
  • How to use key structures and vocabulary learned to develop conversation skills

Assessment: Students' speaking is assessed formally in Term 3 of Year 11. The assessment covers all three elements: a role play, photocard activity and general conversation. Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice questions in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Un oeil sur le monde
 

Students learn how to understand and to express ideas about a range of problems and issues facing the world, including the environment and fair trade. They also learn to understand more about the benefits of volunteering and the advantages and disadvantages of large-scale events.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures related to the context of the environment, fair trade, volunteering and big events
  • Understanding the use of the modal verbs ‘pouvoir’ and ‘devoir’ in the conditional and the passive, as well as indirect object pronouns

Key skills developed:

  • How to understand a variety of spoken and written texts within the context described above
  • How to apply vocabulary knowledge and more complex grammatical understanding to translation and writing tasks
  • How to identify when a number of tenses are combined and how to sequence these when producing language
  • How to use key structures and vocabulary learned to develop conversation skills and ability to argue for and against an idea

Assessment: Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice questions in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

In order to build on the detailed revision guidance given each week, students engage in the following, in the few weeks prior to formal examination:

  • Interactive vocabulary revision, grammar practice, skills deepening and development, extended writing practice and translation
  • Exam style activities across themes and topic areas in listening, reading and writing, addressing strategy, application techniques and refinement of skills
