Acer Trust Public Speaking Competition

15th Jul 2024

We are delighted to report that our team of 10 Year 7 students brilliantly rose to the challenge of representing Icknield Community College in this year’s annual competition.

Round 1 was kicked off by the first Chair, Thea P, who confidently welcomed everyone to ICC and introduced the first group of speakers. Motions included controversial topics such as ‘Money is the root of all evil’, ‘Sports stars are poor role models’ and ‘CCTV is a threat to our freedom’.

Whilst the tricky business of deciding the winner was discussed by our judges including a panel of last year’s participants, an additional debate was set up chaired by a student from each school including Lillie P from ICC. This was a wide-ranging discussion on potential changes in education as desired by the students themselves. It was thrilling to see such a committed, articulate and thoughtful group of students from across the Acer Trust engaged in purposeful discussion, willing to listen to alternative points of view. In the end, one point separated each school and Wood Green went home with the trophy with ICC as runners up.

Congratulations to Thea P, Emma B, Megan N, Matilda C, Lillie P, Camille B, Jake M, Rosey F, Freddie P and Emily P for their hard work in preparation and to Izzy D and Dixi B for their contribution to the judging process.

A really enjoyable day for all those who were lucky enough to be there!
